The benefits of golden sea buckthorn are difficult to overestimate. Our ancestors were well aware of healing properties of the berry. People drank the aromatic tea with sea buckthorn against any ailments in the times of the Ancient Rus. Colds or heart problems, lack of vitamins or stomach aches – our ancestors had one recipe for salvation – a cup of hot drink from sea buckthorn, in search of which they went to the swamps. They collected everything: leaves, berries and even bark, which was actively used in medicine. Berries were saved for delicious tea.

Today, there is no need to go for this natural treasure in the thick forest, and the brewing process of the drink is a matter of minutes. You can choose any recipe since sea buckthorn can be supplemented with different additives.

Sea buckthorn tea is a storehouse of vitamins

Bright orange, aromatic and very tasty freshly brewed sea buckthorn tea according to your favorite recipe is the real sunshine in a cup. It helps to warm up in a chilly winter evening. The tea is a natural antidepressant and an elixir of youth thanks to the composition of berries:


  • B-group vitamins are responsible for the beauty of skin, nails and hair.
  • Ascorbic acid is the main key to health and vitality.
  • Tocopherols (vitamin E) are the main source of youth.


Sea buckthorn is rich in essential oils which are dominated by polyunsaturated fatty acids helping to restore and renew the body.

The valuable berries contain an impressive mineral complex. Calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron and sodium are the main macro and microelements without which a person cannot exist.

Sea buckthorn drink gets its beautiful color from the natural dye of the carotenoid group: provitamin A, which is responsible for strong immunity and good vision. The main thing is to find your favorite recipe.


Sea buckthorn tea: benefits and features

A healthful, tonic sea buckthorn infusion (recipe with black tea or fruit additives) is recommended against vitamin deficiency, vision problems, and diseases of the pelvic organs. It copes with depression, nervousness and regulates sleep. A recipe with raspberries helps to reduce cholesterol levels.


The berry has the following beneficial properties:

  • Replenishment of the deficiency of the vitamin and mineral complex.


Sea buckthorn tea supplemented with citruses is recommended for colds, especially in the off-season, when viruses and infections are most active. The recipe of the drink is not so important; the main ingredient remains unchanged.

The benefits of the berry have been clearly proven, but in case of individual intolerance, it is not recommended to use sea buckthorn decoction.

Berry for future use: recipes for preserving sea buckthorn

Harvesting berries for your favorite recipe begins at the end of summer, and leaves can be collected as early as in April (during the flowering period of the plant). The berries are picked in the first half of the day, in clear and dry weather. According to the recipe, the raw materials are sorted, washed thoroughly and dried with paper towels.


The simplest way to preserve the berries is to freeze them. This will not affect the taste of the drink in the future. There are two ways to freeze:


  • Whole (tight and strong) berries are laid out in one layer and sent to the freezer at a temperature of -18°C and below for 4-6 hours. The finished ice berries are transferred to storage containers (not higher than -10°C).
  • n form of a puree: overripe sea buckthorn berries are ground through a sieve or with an immersion blender and placed in molds. It is convenient to store the puree in portions so that you can add everything to tea at once and the product will not remain. The berries are stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 year.


It is not uncommon to choose a drying recipe. Ripe berries are laid out in a single layer on a grid and left outdoors in the shade. You can dry the air-dried berries in the oven to the end. The leaves are not pre-washed, but dirt is only gently removed with a napkin by hand. They are laid out onto trays and dried in the sun or in an electric dryer (maximum temperature +40°C).


Sea buckthorn tea: new and long-forgotten recipes

Each hostess has her own special recipe, but there are basic rules of brewing:


  • Mash fresh berries into a paste which provides a tasty, aromatic, rich and healthy infusion.
  • It is recommended to brew the berries with water of +85-95 °C (not boiling water).
  • Use a tablespoon of berries per glass of water.
  • Cover the cup and leave it to infuse for 20-30 minutes.
  • Filter the drink through a sieve.
  • Add sugar or honey to taste (few people like the sour and tart infusion in its pure form).


Whichever recipe you choose, we recommend you to brew sea buckthorn tea in ceramic or glass ware to eliminate the risk of a metallic off-flavor. If additives are provided, add them before infusing. The simplest, tastiest and most healthful variants of brewing the tea are given below.


“Keeping with Traditions”

Brew black tea (you can also use green tea) separately in the proportion of one teaspoon per serving, remembering the recipes of our ancestors. Spread a little bit of sea buckthorn cake (rubbed berries) in the cups and pour the brew. This drink is beneficial for health and beauty.


Recipe “Healing Preserved Berries”

Frozen sea buckthorn is excellent for tea. The recipe is simple: pour boiling water over ice berries and leave them to melt. Mash gently and add hot water. Wait for 15 minutes and enjoy the tea.


“Complete Deck”

The original recipe provides for the addition of honey, but already after infusion, since the product disintegrates at a high temperature. It is delicious to drink sea buckthorn infusion with linden or raspberry honey.


Infusion “Vulnerary Herbs”

This herbal recipe is interesting because it is for “multiple use”. Take two teaspoons of dried fireweed leaves and sea buckthorn puree for 500 ml of water, brew and infuse for half an hour. It is convenient to prepare the drink in a thermos and to “additionally brew” the drink 2-3 more times during the day.


Recipe “Invigorating Citrus”

An effective combination of sea buckthorn and orange supplemented with favorite spices. Leave the peel and puree to brew for 12 minutes, and spread the pulp into cups. You can also use the recipe with other citrus.


Delicious Tea “Berry Summer”

Grind raspberries and sea buckthorn berries (25-30 g each) and dilute with water (200 ml). Wait for a while, about 15 minutes. You can change the recipe if you add other berries or leaves of fruit trees/shrubs (black currants, cherries).


Healthful Tea “Express Recovery”

Healthful phytotea with ginger: 85 g mashed berries, 40 g chopped ginger root, a stick of cinnamon (stars of anise tree, cloves). Brewing takes not more than ten minutes. The recipe allows repeated heating of the ingredients.


Drink “Light Freshness”

The recipe includes 4-5 leaves of peppermint which are brewed with black tea for 15 minutes. Then mix 120 g of puree with honey and combine them in the drink.


“Oriental Subtleties”

Spicy flavor is provided by the following spices: cinnamon, cardamom, anise tree, vanilla, nutmegs. Grind the spices, mix them with berries and brew. The drink is ready after 11 minutes.


“Green” Sea Buckthorn Infusion

In addition to berries, the recipe includes sea buckthorn leaves (a teaspoon per glass of water). It turns out a powerful herbal antioxidant, which has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system and immunity.

The classic recipe can be diversified when serving a tea ceremony. You can serve sea buckthorn tea with quince jam or cranberry jam, honey or pine cone jam.
